Quebec highway control inspectors want weapons added to their equipment
They also want to be placed under the authority of the Quebec Public Security Ministry rather than the SAAQ.
Quebec’s highway control inspectors are once again calling on the provincial government to allow them to be armed, which they say is for their protection and that of the public.
The 300 members of the Fraternité des constables du contrôle routier also want to be placed under the authority of the Quebec Public Security Ministry rather than that of the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec.
The workers are responsible for inspecting heavy vehicles, intercepting poorly loaded vehicles, enforcing emission regulations on heavy vehicles and ensuring safety standards for school bus and taxi transport.
The union is calling for weapons to be added to their equipment because of incidents involving aggressive or intimidating drivers.
Union president Éric Labonté said that “every day we face malicious individuals who take advantage of the fact we are literally unarmed to intimidate us or express a lack of respect. It is necessary to act now before an incident occurs.”
Last May, a report tabled by a committee examining the future of policing in Quebec recommended that the status of special constables who ensure security in Quebec courthouses and certain other public installations, highway inspectors and wildlife agents be re-examined.
The inspectors were scheduled to hold a demonstration Tuesday in front of the offices of Quebec Public Security Minister Geneviève Guilbault.
